Comments by s''rii t'ippan'akaacaarya:
In this chapter, Arjuna desires to see Kr's'n'a's majestic form. This is a unique form, much unlike the more common form that Arjuna had previously seen. Sanjjaya and Arjuna both try to describe that majestic form, but it is obviously very difficult to describe it. Arjuna also says that he doesn't understand Kr's'n'a's appearance, and Kr's'n'a then explains that all Arjuna's opponents are already killed. This means that for the majestic form, time does not function in the way we are used to, but the all-powerful Kr's'n'a is the master of even time. In that way, Arjuna could get a glimpse of the future in the majestic form. Arjuna's opponents would be killed even if Arjuna would choose not to fight, but Kr's'n'a still wanted Arjuna to fight because that was his divine duty, and as a reward he would enjoy the perfect empire. Arjuna was very frightened of this majestic form, and he offered salutations from all direcions, and apologised for not giving Kr's'n'a enough respect in the past. In that way, he actually apologised for what is really his natural relationship, and generally such apologies are not necessary, but because of fear, he offered apologies and salutations. Generally, a devotee's relationship with Kr's'n'a is so nice that the devotee should never have to offer apologies for considering him a friend. However, because of seeing the unique strong form that he requested to see, Arjuna was filled with fear and acted in a way which is not typical for a devotee of Kr's'n'a. He then requested to see Kr's'n'a's four-armed form again, and this was the form that he was accustomed to see. Kr's'n'a then reassumed his original form, and told Arjuna that this was a special form that had not been seen by anyone else, and when Arjuna saw the familiar form again, he calmed down. In the end of the chapter, Kr's'n'a says that he can be reached, seen, and known through unrestricted devotion, but not through austerity, donation, or sacrifice. Generally, however, the devotees don't desire to see any strong majestic form, but they rather desire to see a form that they can have a nice relationship with. In verses 48, 53, and 54, the word "s''akya"(S:Vy:) occurs, and there are different opinions among the translators as to whether this is supposed to be understood as "s''akyah'" or "s''akye". Both forms are irregular in terms of sandhi, but both are possible and the meaning is practically the same, so there is no need to get into any dispute about this.
