Some important points about freedom of speech,
and how it is threatened nowadays:

Freedom of speech is very important for exchanging information, and it is necessary for people in general to be educated and knowledgeable in the news in the world, and to avoid a monopoly of flow of information, which can in many ways deteriorate into a channel of propaganda for whoever has the power. It can be seen that whoever has too much power has a tendency to try to stop information that is not deemed appropriate knowledge for the average citizen. This is because, as the saying goes, "knowledge is power".

In the internet, a lot of different informations and opinions have been exchanged, and this has led to a certain tendency amongst people who have power to want to censor the internet more and more. In some places, this means actively blocking certain sites so that the user can't see them, even though they are still in the actual internet. In some places, there has been pressure on web hosts and web hotels to remove certain sites from the internet altogether, because the content of the site might not be politically correct. This is already going on, and also in countries that usually are considered to allow a fair amount of free speech. I consider these tendencies alarming, and they might lead to a society where information on the internet will be very limited.
